The hadith of the jar of gold, animated: a man buys a piece of land from another man and finds a jar full of gold in it. He carries it back to the seller: he bought only the land, not the gold. The seller refuses it: he sold the land and everything in it. They ask a man to judge between them, and he makes peace instead: he marries the buyer's son to the seller's daughter, and the gold is spent on the young couple and given in charity. A story told by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about honesty and leaving what is not ours (Sahih al-Bukhari 3472, Sahih Muslim 1721), with the saying that whoever gives something up for Allah is given something better (Musnad Ahmad 23074) and the verse of the Quran recited at the end (At-Talaq 65:2-3).

The hadith and the verse

About this telling

The film tells this hadith in its own words, as a scene. Details such as the opening words about a secret under the earth that no one knows who buried, or when, the field at the edge of the village, the price paid and the handshake, the morning he digs his new land, the moment he imagines what the gold could buy, the jar he covers and carries to the seller, the two men sitting before the judge with the jar between them, the two homes becoming one family, the last gold coin falling into a poor man's bowl, and the narrator's words between and after the scenes, are the film's telling, not words of the hadith. What is authentic is the hadith below, with the other narrations listed with it, the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him) recorded by Ahmad, and the words of the Quran recited at the end.

Translation

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A man bought a piece of land from another man, and the buyer found an earthenware jar filled with gold in the land. The buyer said to the seller. 'Take your gold, as I have bought only the land from you, but I have not bought the gold from you.' The (former) owner of the land said, "I have sold you the land with everything in it.' So both of them took their case before a man who asked, 'Do you have children?' One of them said, "I have a boy.' The other said, "I have a girl.' The man said, 'Marry the girl to the boy and spend the money on both of them and give the rest of it in charity.'"

Transcript

The words of the episode, from the English subtitles of the original voice.

Beneath this earth… a secret lay sleeping. Who buried it? And when? No one knows.

A jar of gold… and two men, and neither of them wants it.

A story told by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Among the people who lived before us… a man bought a piece of land from another man. A field at the edge of the village. He paid for it, and the two men shook hands. And the land now belonged to its new owner. One morning, he went out to dig his new land. And the man who had bought the land found, in his land… …a jar full of gold. “Gold…!” So much gold… and no one sees him… except Allah. For a moment, he saw what this gold could do. A bigger house, finer clothes, a life without hard work.

Then he came back to his senses. He covered the jar and carried it to the man who had sold him the land.

And the man who had bought the land said to him: “Take your gold from me.” He had bought only the land from him, not the gold.

And the man who had owned the land said: “I sold you the land and everything in it.”

A jar of gold between them… and each one kept giving it back to the other. They were not arguing over who would take it… but over who would leave it.

So they went to a man to judge between them.

They sat before him, with the jar between them.

And the man judging between them said: “Do you have children?”

“I have a son.”

“I have a daughter.”

“Marry the son to the daughter.” Then he said: “Spend some of it on the two of them, and give some in charity.”

And the two homes became one family.

And a share of the gold went to the poor.

And the last gold coin fell into a poor man's bowl.

Two men… one of them only had to stay silent for the gold to be his… but both chose honesty. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told us this story so that we learn honesty, and to leave what is not ours. The scholar Imam Muslim recorded it in the chapter: “It is good for a judge to make peace between the two sides.” The judge did not rule for one against the other; he made peace between them and joined their two homes. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “You will never give up something for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, without Allah replacing it with something better for you.” And Allah says: “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Quran 65:2–3)
