The hadith and the verse

About this telling

The film tells this hadith in its own words, as a scene. Details such as the house with the well and the fig tree, the greeting between the two men, the advice at the well and in the alley, the devout man's plea on the Day of Judgement (“My Lord, why? I used to pray, I used to fast”), the sinner's “Praise be to Allah”, the rain and the sinner's repentance alone, the graves, and the angels taking the devout man away are the film's telling, not words of the hadith. The narrator's explanations (the lines that begin “That is”) and the lessons at the end are the film's explanation, not words of the hadith. The hadith does not say what the sinner's sin was. What is authentic is the hadith below, with the other narrations listed with it, and the verse of the Quran recited at the end.

Translation

Narrated AbuHurayrah: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: There were two men among Banu Isra'il, who were striving for the same goal. One of them would commit sin and the other would strive to do his best in the world. The man who exerted himself in worship continued to see the other in sin. He would say: Refrain from it. One day he found him in sin and said to him: Refrain from it. He said: Leave me alone with my Lord. Have you been sent as a watchman over me? He said: I swear by Allah, Allah will not forgive you, nor will he admit you to Paradise. Then their souls were taken back (by Allah), and they met together with the Lord of the worlds. He (Allah) said to this man who had striven hard in worship; Had you knowledge about Me or had you power over that which I had in My hand? He said to the man who sinned: Go and enter Paradise by My mercy. He said about the other: Take him to Hell. AbuHurayrah said: By Him in Whose hand my soul is, he spoke a word by which this world and the next world of his were destroyed.

Transcript

The words of the episode, from the English subtitles of the original voice.

One single word… spoken by a devout man in a moment of anger… …and it ruined his life in this world and the next. A story told by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed on by his companion Abu Hurayra. Among the Children of Israel, two men lived like brothers, that is, two friends who loved each other as if they were brothers. “Peace be upon you, my brother.” “And upon you be peace.”

One of them used to sin. The hadith does not say what his sin was… but he disobeyed his Lord and drifted away from Him.

And the other worked hard at worshipping Allah: he prayed, he fasted, and he remembered Allah often.

The devout man kept seeing the other one sinning, and he would say to him: “Stop it.” That is: stop, leave what you are doing. And that was good advice… because giving sincere advice is part of the faith. And it happened again… day after day. “Stop it!” The sinner would listen… and then go back to his sin.

Until one day he found him sinning, and said to him: “Stop it!” And he replied: “Leave me to my Lord. Were you sent to watch over me?” The devout man grew angry… and said a terrible word: “By Allah, Allah will not forgive you!”

Or he said: “Allah will not let you into Paradise.” He swore by Allah, as if he could decide for Him… and judged his brother on something only Allah knows.

Then Allah took their souls… and both men died.

Each was buried in his grave… alone, carrying nothing with him but his deeds.

Then came the Day of Judgement… the day every person stands before his Lord.

Both men rose from their graves…

…and stood together before the Lord of all the worlds. The devout man was sure of himself… as sure as on the day he judged his brother. And Allah said to the devout man: “Did you know Me? Or did you have power over what is in My hand?” That is: did you know what I know? Or did you own My mercy, to keep it from My servants? And he found no answer. As for his brother, the sinner… he waited in fear, knowing his sins. And Allah said to the sinner: “Go and enter Paradise by My mercy.” “Praise be to Allah… praise be to Allah.” He did not say “by your deeds”… He said “by My mercy.”

And about the other, Allah said: “Take him to Hell.” “My Lord… why?! I used to pray… I used to fast!” The angels took him to Hell… trembling with fear.

Long years of prayer and fasting… lost because of one single word.

A word with which he wanted to shut the door of Allah's mercy… in his brother's face.

As for the sinner… he walked into Paradise, with tears in his eyes. And in it, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us, is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined.

Abu Hurayra said: “By the One in whose hand my soul is… he spoke a word that ruined his life in this world and the next.” He was not ruined because he advised his brother… advice is good. He was ruined because he swore by Allah… and decided that Allah would not forgive his brother. So never judge anyone by their sins… you see their sin, but you do not see their repentance. Perhaps they repent in a single moment, alone with their Lord… and no one knows. And never say: “Allah will not forgive so-and-so”… for Allah is the most merciful of all. In the book Sahih Muslim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us that a man said: “By Allah, Allah will not forgive so-and-so.” And Allah the Exalted said: “Who is this who swears in My name that I will not forgive so-and-so? I have forgiven him, and I have cancelled your deeds.” And Allah says, in another hadith: “My mercy comes before My anger.” So if you see your brother in a sin… advise him gently, and ask Allah to guide him. And fear for yourself… for no one knows how their own life will end. And Allah the Exalted says: Say: “O My servants who have wronged themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Truly, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, Allah forgives all sins. He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.” (Az-Zumar 39:53)
